I was skinny, people trolled me: Yami Gautam opens up on her struggle

Mumbai: Actress Yami Gautam plays a key role in “Bala”, starring Ayushmann Khurrana, which speaks of self-acceptance and questions the criteria of beauty established by society. The actress says that as a teenager she had the part of her struggle with her personality and physical appearance.

“During my growing days, I was very thin and everyone told me that I was weak because I was small. Being a Punjabi from Chandigarh, I was surrounded by girls who had a broad frame and in comparison, I would look weak. I ate everything to gain weight, but did not realize that my body structure was narrow.

Once my mother realized that something like this was bothering me, she said: “Never think that you are weak just because you are skinny. You are a strong girl. One day, you will see how strong and beautiful you are,” Yami told IANS .

Yami said that her mother’s words helped her deal with the problem that was otherwise created by society.

Being a celebrity, public speaking is part of her current lifestyle, but Yami says that she was once an introverted child and added that she had stage fright.

“I remember having to recite a poem at school. I went in prepared, but when I was on stage in front of a crowded room, I was paralyzed. I was nervous and God knows how I got those lines out and ran away. That was me when I was an adult child. So yeah, I had to work hard to get over such a thing, because as an actor I’m supposed to be free, I shouldn’t have inhibitions. Most of the comments I have received (from “Bala”) is that I was very uninhibited, “shared the actress.

The story of “Bala” revolves around the struggles of a young man, played by Ayushmann, to deal with premature baldness, which gives him low self-esteem because society makes fun of him and people call him “takla.” Aside from Ayushmann and Yami, the film also stars Bhumi Pednekar. Yami plays a model and social media sensation named Pari, who is also a brand ambassador for a justice cream.

While the character appears to be attractive to the eye, at the end of the film, her character raises an important question about self-acceptance.

She “She is a noisy and exaggerated character, but deep down she reflects an important part of society. She is the question we must ask ourselves, why do we see ourselves through the lens of society when it comes to appearance and the definition of beauty, and why do we question ourselves instead of practicing self-acceptance, ”Yami noted. she who left her mark with her roles in “Vicky Donor”, “Kaabil” and “Uri: The Surgical Strike”.
